From the point of view of health and air quality in the house, it’s better to avoid carpets. Hard floor coverings are easier to keep clean just by doing regular wet cleaning. But I agree that they make the house cozy, and sometimes that’s just what you need.

By the way, another reason for the accumulation of dust and allergens in carpets can be dirty filters of HVAC systems (air conditioners, furnaces) and dirty air ducts. Filters should be cleaned at least once every three months, but you may need to clean them more often during the peak winter and summer months when it’s likely that your system will be running at almost maximum capacity for long periods. And as for the air ducts, clean them once a year.
