Why Should I Buy Cordless Power Tools?
Table of Contents
One of the keys to success for any project is having the right tools for the job. One group of tools I would like to recommend is cordless power tools. Sure, there are many “job-specific” corded power tools that are required for certain jobs, but for the majority of DIY home improvement projects, cordless power tools are a great option. They offer several benefits.
Benefits Of Cordless Power Tools
The ability to grab a tool and complete a task without having to search for an extension cord, or switch between tools that have to be plugged in, can save a bunch of time. Power extension cords can be a tripping hazard and, if improperly used, can lead to other potential safety issues, such as overloads and fire hazards. For example, I recently used my small cordless circular saw to cut an opening in a meat smoker box project. The job was done in the time it would have taken me to get out my corded power tools and extension cords.
And what about projects that are in an area that does not have electricity nearby? Cordless power tools to the rescue! They are worth there weight in gold when working on the kid’s treehouse in the backyard or building that new deer blind in the most remote part of your hunting property.
There are many different quality manufactures of cordless power tools to choose from. In this article, I am recommending Dewalt tools. Dewalt is a good brand name, that has been around for a long time, and they are the brand of cordless power tools I own. I have owned them for many years and they have held up well. I feel very comfortable recommending them to anyone looking to purchase cordless power tools.
Things To Consider Before Buying Cordless Power Tools
No matter what manufacturer you decide to purchase there are a couple of things to consider. Most of the quality cordless power tools come in different voltages. The higher voltage tools offer more power for completing tasks. You need to think about what you plan to use the tools for. If you see yourself taking on more than just drilling the occasional hole or putting a few screws in for some curtain rods, you may want to go with the higher voltage tools. They will handle larger projects and you won’t run the risk of overloading the tools, which can damage them and shorten their life. These should not be impulse buys, but more of an investment to help in future projects.
Another thing to remember as you add new tools to your arsenal is to make sure the batteries for your new tool is compatible with your older tools. That doesn’t just mean that they have to be the same voltage, which they do, but that they will physically fit your new tool. Not all manufacturers do this, so be sure and do your research on that.
My Dewalt power tools are the 18-volt design and Dewalt proudly points out that they have maintained the same battery pack design so that their newer tools use the same battery as the older ones. I added the Dewalt impact driver to my collection several years after purchasing most of my other tools and the battery fit and worked perfectly. That’s a huge benefit. It allowed me to purchase just the tool, without the battery. That helped lower the cost and it also reduces the clutter and congestion where you keep your batteries and chargers.
Dewalt Cordless Power Tools I Use
Below is a list of the Dewalt power tools I own and use. I have used them on many projects and I am certain they will help me successfully complete many more projects.
All of these tools are 18-volt tools and it’s beginning to become hard to find replacements. I try to keep the links updated for any replacement tools and batteries whenever possible.
Great for anchoring cement board and driving longer screws.
Drill / Driver – DC720 (This 18-volt drill/driver is no longer available)
Perfect all-around drill for drilling and screwing. One of the most used tools I own!
Reciprocating Saw – DW938 (18-volt replacement reciprocating saw)
Very versatile saw! Change the blade and you go from cutting wood to metal. If you’ve ever used or seen one in action, you know what I mean.
Circular Saw – DCS392 (6-1/2” blades) (18-volt replacement circular saw)
Ideal for quickly cutting off a few boards or for building that deer blind in a remote location!
Flashlight – DW908 (This 18-volt flashlight is hard to find and currently too expensive, in my opinion)
It has a multi-positional head and is great for light in a work area or during a power outage. The flashlight is another one of the most used tools I own!
Battery – DC9099 (18-volt replacement battery)
Always have a spare, or two, on hand!
Battery Charger – DW9116 (18-volt replacement charger)
The Batteries and charger are obviously the heart of the operation. The batteries are interchangeable with all Dewalt 18 volt tools and have a good battery life, but it is always good to have a couple of extras, especially when working on a bigger project or in a remote location.
Conclusion
As long as Dewalt supplies 18-volt batteries, I’m sure these tools will last me many more years. But as they fail it may be time to start replacing them with their 20-volt counterpart. However, no matter what, I will always own cordless tools!
